| Karate comprises three basic elements: The learning of the basic
techniques, the gradual acceleration of sparring skills, and the
Kata, or forms.
Shotokan Karate emphasizes a practical, self-defense-oriented approach
to Karate. The various stances, punches, kicks and blocks all combine
to build strength, speed and power. Almost anyone can begin taking
Karate, no matter what their age and physical condition. We tailor
the beginning classes to accomodate all levels of fitness and ability,
and there are classes where all levels are welcome to participate.
Shotokan Karate is a traditional Okinawan martial art. Originally
created by Master Gichin Funakoshi, it was further developed and
refined by Master Masatoshi Nakayama, who made it his mission to
bring it from Japan to the rest of the world. From a very humble
beginning, Shotokan Karate has spread to almost every country in
the world.
